Lovely! Maybe you could tack the doilies together around a balloon and then use spray starch to stiffen them.

How would a person make one of these? How gorgeous...I would have audibly gasped as well. Thanks for sharing...

I have a box of ancient doilies and antique lace that must've been passed down to my grandmother (who was 93 when she died in 2002) from her mother. I somehow inherited it and I've been wondering what to do with the pieces! How FANTASTIC!!!

What an absolutely lovely creation! How does it keep it's shape? I would love to make something similar with my treasured collection of doilies.

I'm betting that spray fabric glue or a starch mixture is helping with the shape. But what an amazing piece! I love it!

I believe it is probably a fabric stiffener such as Stiffy. (You use the same principle to make the little cheesecloth ghosts over cola bottles for Halloween). Then you'd have to do like a part at a time & let it dry then continue over some sort of form like a big balloon which then would be popped & removed. Now I know what to do with my grandmother's doilies! :D

Alternatively, you could also use a large Japanese Paper lantern (which comes in other shapes than round too), remove the paper and form the doilies around the basic form of the lantern. That'd be the smartest way to do it as it is already made to BE a lamp so it already has the fixture in it, and they don't cost much either, around $15.

so liikeeee... HOW DO I MAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL THING?

I would use stiffy on the doilies around one of those large kid's punching ball balloons covered in vaseline. Once the doilies are dry, pop the balloon and pull it out! Voila!

You can make this at home. You go to the local party supply store and ask for a 3 foot circumference balloon. Then you blow it up, dip the doilies in a mixture of glue and water, then stick them on the balloon. Then let it dry, pop the balloon, and you buy a lamp kit from a hardware store (ikea sells them) and assemble it. Very awesome

aufblasbarer Ball und Leim: Einfach gemacht. (means: we had those 20 years ago in our kinderzimmer)

But I love them.

Really pretty... Now I HAVE to make one....

I bet you could use sugar water & hang it to dry.. I made easter baskets that way , winding string around balloons, then dip in strong sugar water & hang to dry When it gets nice & stiff, then you could always put something stronger on it for it to be more permanent.diessim

my mother used to make these with her handmade doilies and she used watered down elmers glue! it dries clear, and if you put it over a balloon you get the shape you want, just be sure to leave space for the light and maybe some wire help hold the shade away from the bulb

If you use a sugar bass the heat from the light would heat the sugar and malt it. To make your own vintage doilies dye with tea.

Awesome idea, love it :)

You'd have to use glue, Diana - the sugar concoction would soften as it heats up from the heat of the lamp - unless you were using something like LEDs that don't generate a lot of heat.

Aaagghhh!! I've been trying to do this with lace for my friends wedding! I'm having so much trouble getting the lace to stick to the balloons!! Elmers and water is just not working!!!!

would mod podge work?

I bet you could use the same technique used here:

Mix corn starch, glue and warm water together until it has a smooth texture.

Oh how gorgeous! I have been scouring how to make a chinese paper lamp myself but this is prettier and seems more plausible as a diy!
Just a thought, wouldn't using a small amount of baking non stick spray on the balloon help? I was think somehow the glue would stick to parts of the balloon and jeopardize the lamp.

Hi Michelle, I think I first saw your doilie lamp on pinterest, and now I find you again through stumble upon! I absolutely adore this! I am in love with doilies...and this just makes me fall deeper! I will definitely try this for my home!

Just saw this on pinterest.Wow what a cool idea.
I'm just wondering how hard this would be to clean. We have a woodstove and it gets dusty here.
